Why Silverado 1500 Towing Ratings Vary
The engine alone does not determine Silverado towing capacity. Cab style, bed length, drivetrain, axle and GCWR configuration, wheel size and trailering packages all matter.
This means two Silverado 1500 trucks with the same engine can have substantially different trailer ratings.
Chevrolet lists maximum towing of approximately 8,800 lbs. with the 6.2L V8 ZR2 and 8,700 lbs. with the 3.0L Duramax ZR2. ZR2 is optimized for off-road capability rather than maximum towing.
2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Towing Capacity
The 2026 Silverado 2500 HD is available with a 6.6L gasoline V8 or Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8. Chevrolet publishes separate ratings for conventional trailers and 5th-wheel/gooseneck trailers because hitch type and vehicle configuration significantly affect capacity.

Why Wheel Size and GVWR Matter on a 2500 HD
Chevrolet’s 2500 HD trailering chart shows that wheel and GVWR configuration can change the truck’s towing rating even when the engine and cab appear similar. Some 17-inch-wheel configurations are limited to 14,500 pounds of conventional trailer weight, while higher-rated configurations can tow considerably more.
2500 HD Max Trailering Package
On qualifying Duramax Silverado 2500 HD configurations, the Max Trailering Package can increase GCWR to as much as 30,000 pounds and allows conventional towing of up to 20,000 pounds. Properly configured 5th-wheel or gooseneck trucks can reach 22,050 pounds.
2026 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Towing Capacity
The 2026 Silverado 3500 HD provides Chevrolet’s highest trailering capacity. Depending on engine, cab, drivetrain, single-rear-wheel or dual-rear-wheel configuration and hitch type, the Silverado 3500 HD can tow as much as 36,000 pounds.

What Does Maximum Towing Capacity Mean?
Maximum towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight Chevrolet rates a particular vehicle configuration to tow when properly equipped. It does not mean every version of that model can tow the advertised maximum.
Why Can Two Similar Chevy Trucks Have Different Towing Capacities?
Towing capacity can change based on engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, cab style, bed length, wheel size, trim, GVWR, trailering package and other equipment. Passengers, accessories and cargo carried in the vehicle can also reduce the amount available for towing.
What Is Trailer Tongue Weight?
Trailer tongue weight is the downward force the trailer coupler places on the vehicle’s hitch. For most conventional trailers, Chevrolet generally recommends approximately 10% to 15% of the loaded trailer weight.
What About Gooseneck and 5th-Wheel Trailers?
Gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers place substantially more weight over the truck’s rear axle. Chevrolet states that kingpin weight is generally 15% to 25% of the loaded trailer weight. Payload capacity, GVWR and rear axle weight ratings are especially important when towing these types of trailers.
What Is GCWR?
GCWR means Gross Combination Weight Rating. It is the maximum allowable combined weight of the properly equipped loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer, including passengers, cargo, fuel, optional equipment and accessories.
What Is GVWR?
GVWR means Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It represents the maximum allowable total weight of the vehicle itself when loaded, including passengers, cargo and hitch or kingpin weight transferred from the trailer.
When Are Trailer Brakes Required?
Chevrolet’s 2026 Trailering Guide states that trailer brakes are required above 2,000 pounds of trailer weight on Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, and above 1,500 pounds on other Chevrolet models. State requirements can vary, so applicable laws should also be checked.
